Just kicked off....watching in between packing...flying to blighty tonight to witness a victorious England with my brethren on that sceptered isle......
Hahaaaa! We're here! Great blog Joost. I've taken the liberty of putting a link to it on my site. Please let me know if this is infringement of copyright and I'll keep it there anyway (piaow piaow!). Beautiful logo matey. Love it. I hope to come here and write all kinds of drivel for you.
I watched the first half of S Africa v Mexico and had to go out for the remainder. I could tell from the radio that it was rubbish in the second half. Same old dials and knobs. Do you think anyone will read my nonsense here? I'm quite sure I won't.
Well, the euphoria dies down after Day 1 and what have we witnessed? What is the shape of the tournament so far? Of course, like the General Election, it's difficult to predict much after just 2 results. I mean, just because Uruguay and France drew 0-0, doesn't mean the LibDems are going to hold Leicester South. One of the first encouraging things to have been displayed today is some very good refereeing and linesmanning. When the officials are good, they go largely unnoticed, so I thought I'd just like to say that. Of course, tomorrow night will be different probably, when England have 4 goals disallowed because the scorers were breathing too regularly. Something like that always happens to us! But so far so good. The vuvuzelas are apparently all tuned to B-flat. Some of the greatest music has been written in this key and I think this maybe explains why it is such a joy to hear this single note for the entirety of the games we're watching. Sheer rapsodic bliss, eh? Has anyone come to any conclusions about the way these new footballs are behaving? Looks to me like there's a tendency for them to be over-hit. Ok, your turn to talk now.
There just weren't enough ITV HD advert breaks last night, were there? I rang them in the 81st minute when we getting desperate for another goal, but they wouldn't oblige. Another howling error was Gareth Southgate (one of the panellists) said that in 1990 we drew our opening game with Egypt. As every self-respecting Englishman knows, it was Ireland we drew with in that opener; Egypt was the team we thrashed 1-0 to top the group. All silliness aside, I think I'm fairly ok now about the USA result. Johnson, Heskey and Lennon had good performances and even BobbyG did well in the second half. The thing that got me really angry (I mean, really seething) was earlier in the afternoon when Maradona, having preached about fair play before the tournament, made the yellow-card-gesture to the referee after the latter had just been conned by Messi into awarding a free kick. I wonder if hypocrasy has become a virtue in this odd age of ours. That might explain why everyone seems to love the dirty little cheating can't. I so wanted Nigeria to equalise after that, but Remi's boys didn't have a clue. I apologise for the length of this post. Just needed to tell someone (is there someone here?). Love and kisses, Johnnypoos.
